Everyone knows Las Vegas as a city of bright lights, towering casinos, rooftop nightclubs and after-dark excess. And if you’re planning to travel around America, you’ve most probably lined it up as a place where you’re going to blow a few dollars playing blackjack, drinking brewskies and dancing the evening away. Surprisingly, however, Sin City isn’t an entirely nocturnal place and actually has plenty to keep the intrepid traveller entertained during the day as well as once the sun has gone down.
Ride a Rollercoaster
In many ways, Las Vegas is more a playground than a city, and walking around town you’ll notice a variety of metal oddities protruding from the sides of the skyscrapers – many of which are terrifying rides!
These include the green clawed monster, Insanity at the Stratosphere, which spins its terrified victims 900ft above the strip below, while they experience forces of up to 3G.
Also at the Stratosphere is X-Scream – a rollercoaster that launches riders over the edge of the building on a dangling piece of track. Elsewhere, the thrilling roller coaster at New York New York, features a 144ft drop and a 180-degree heartline spiral.
Suffice to say that it’s probably best not to indulge in one of Vegas’s famous all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets before you attempt any of these heart-stopping rides.
Jump out of a plane
Surrounded by desert, Sin City is the ideal place to throw yourself out of a plane if the rides at Stratosphere don’t finish you off – after all, there’s plenty of space to land after your parachute deploys.
As well as enjoying stunning views of the Strip, thousands of feet below, you’ll also get a good look out over the Red Rock National Park and Mount Charleston – who knew Vegas could be so picturesque and terrifying all at the same time? If you can keep your eyes open, that is.
Get behind the wheel of a Ferrari
Back on terra firma, only in Vegas do hire cars come with soft tops and 600bhp engines.
If you strike it lucky at the casino, what better way to spend your cash than by jumping behind the wheel of a Ferrari or Lamborghini and going for a 30-mile burn up along the most scenic roads in the Vegas area?
Or for the authentic Americana experience, eschew these refined European supercars in favour of the brute power of a Corvette, and leave a trail of dust in the desert.
Dig it!
Continuing the Vegas-is-a-playground and only-in-Vegas themes, if you don’t really fancy driving a sports car you can always get behind the controls of a bulldozer or excavator instead!
Book a drive in a Caterpillar machine and spend the afternoon building earth mounds, knocking down trees and digging trenches – a real life Bob the Builder experience.
One word of warning before you book any sort of driving-related activity, you will be breathalysed beforehand, so make sure you don’t booze before your tour starts or else you’ll be chucked off. Even Vegas has some rules you’ve got to follow.
As you can see, Vegas will make sure you’re entertained morning, noon and night. The only question is, can you keep up?
