However, there is more to certain cruises than meets the eye, as numerous itineraries go to truly fascinating countries and utterly enthralling cities.Take a Saga Travel cruise to the Baltic for example, as this part of the world boasts an engrossing history, a fair few contrasting cultures and some remarkable landscapes. Bergen, Norway
Although the capital Oslo is awash with alluring attractions, Norway’s second city of Bergen is arguably more attractive and appealing. Along with its picturesque rainbow coloured houses that line the waterfront, visitors are treated to a stunning view of seven dramatic mountains overlooking the bay.
But if taking in these astonishing aesthetics wasn’t enough, there is also plenty to see and do as well, from discovering Bergen’s many art galleries and museums to simply wandering around the charming Old Town.
Stockholm, Sweden
Yet another prepossessing destination, Stockholm oozes style and sophistication. Having said that, Sweden’s capital doesn’t lack any substance either, as tranquil parks and calm waterways sit next to bustling streets and lots of consumer activity.
Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman described Stockholm as a “large village” rather than a city and it is easy to see why. Head to the Old Town and make your way through the tight alleyways flanked by medieval architecture.
St Petersburg, Russia
Decadence and grandeur are the order of the day in St Petersburg, as the country’s capital of culture plays host to awe-inspiring palaces and incredible cathedrals. On top of that, nights out at the ballet or circus are bound to amaze and astonish in equal measure.
Famous landmarks such as the Hermitage Museum, the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, the Winter Palace and the Peter and Paul Fortress are sure to be on any to-do list and will no doubt change your opinion of this country.
Tallinn, Estonia
As soon as you step off the boat and enter Tallinn’s Old Town, it will probably feel like you are in a fairy tale thanks to the cobbled streets, church spires and red roof buildings. What’s more, the antiques and handicrafts on offer at its various markets only add to Tallinn’s quaint appeal. For more enlightenment about Estonia, be sure to visit the city’s museums, and try some authentic fare at any number of Tallinn’s traditional restaurants.
So, before booking an archetypal cruise to a far-flung tropical destination, consider visiting these Baltic cities, they won’t let you down!
