Going on a road trip with Fido? Traveling by road is quite different than traveling by plane or train in that you can control where and how often you stop, which can be a great thing when you have a furry companion with you. 

 

 

While you might feel prepared for a road trip, you might be missing a few dog essentials that can make the journey a whole lot easier for you and your pup.

If you need a road trip companion, consider taking your four-legged best friend. They don’t complain about your music taste, they’re always happy to stop, and they’re happy to spend hours on end with you.

Before the two of you hop in the car and hit the road, don’t forget to pack these five essential items for the trip ahead:

Food and Drink Supplies

While it may not be easy to feed your dog while on the road, having some kibble or small reward treats on hand for them to nibble on while you drive can be useful for keeping your dog relaxed. Judge how much food to take on how long you will be on the road. If you are going to be on the road when you would typically feed your pup, pack a bowl and their normal amount of feed so that you can keep to a routine. 

You should also bring plenty of water and an extra bowl for it when you stop at gas stations or rest stops. You don’t want your dog to get dehydrated!

Important Documents

You never want to leave home without any necessary documentation, like ESA paperwork, service dog paperwork, or proof of the latest vaccinations. These documents can make it easier for you to bring your dog along with you when stopping at certain hotels, stores, and gas stations. If you would like to feel safer and need to register your service dog look into agencies like the Service Dog Registration of America and others like it for certification.

Leash and Waste Bags

You should never let your dog roam around at a rest stop without a leash. For the protection of your dog and everyone else there, you should always pack a leash and collar to use at any time the dog leaves the car. You should also bring plenty of waste bags. While most airports will provide these at their dog relief stations, you’re on your own on a road trip. Bring more than you anticipate needing to be safe. 

A Chew Toy Or Bone

Dogs can get bored on road trips, too. If you think your pup is likely to get anxious or restless while on the trip, include a few chew toys or a massive bone in your puppy kit. Choose something they can’t destroy that won’t make a huge mess and won’t smell bad in the car. You can use them as a reward for good behavior or as a last-resort distraction if they’re not enjoying the trip. These toys may also bring your dog a sense of comfort in unfamiliar settings. 

Medication

Does your dog require daily medication that they’ll need on the trip? Even if they aren’t on regular medication, your vet may recommend some anti-anxiety treatments or car sickness relievers. Bring all of these medications in their original bottles, so you know the proper dose and understand any possible side effects.
