Taking a road trip as opposed to other forms of transportation provides tourists with a better perspective about the region they are travelling in. That’s probably why, despite advances in train travel and the convenience of flying, road trips are still so popular. These days, road trips don’t have to be taken domestically. It’s pretty easy to hire a car abroad. After that, it’s just a matter of selecting a route and setting off on one of these top road holidays.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Representing one of the world’s most scenic drives, the Amalfi Coast route straddles steep cliffs overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. Along the way, drivers and passengers will pass through gorgeous seaside towns clinging perilously to mountainsides. Alongside stunning 16th-century villas are terraced gardens filled with lemon trees. This part of Italy is famous for its limoncello, which is a potent lemon liqueur made almost exclusively in Amalfi.
Santa Fe Trail, New Mexico
Running from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Franklin, Missouri, the Santa Fe Trail was a vital 19th century transport route for American pioneers. Santa Fe is America’s oldest capital and full of distinctive adobe brick homes. The region still has the spirit of the Wild West, and is surrounded by open desert landscapes frequented by wild mustangs. Travelling east towards Missouri, the trail cuts through the heart of the US, where it’s still possible to experience true Americana.
The Flower Route, The Netherlands
This short 40 km drive is best experienced in April and May, when flowers are at their fullest with their brightest blooms. Starting in Haarlem, follow the famous Bloemen Route down to Leiden to pass through endless colourful fields of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and other beautiful flowers. The flowers here are arranged neatly into rows to create a wonderful rainbow effect for drivers passing by. The only structures breaking up the views of the flower fields are windmills and old country homes.
Cornwall, United Kingdom
The water here might be chilly, but the views from coastal Cornwall drives are stunning. Lush green farming and grazing land meet dramatic cliffs that fall to the sea here. It’s also possible to visit world-class attractions like the Eden Project during a road trip through this scenic part of England. Take a few days to truly explore the region, tuck into local B&Bs at night, and enjoy the local cuisine as well.
North Island, New Zealand
Tucked away in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is a country of dramatic and spectacular landscapes. Driving through the North Island, it’s very easy to see why it was chosen as the filming site for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. The island has everything – beaches, mountains, lakes, farmland, sun, sea, and snow. Explore unspoilt hiking trails to reveal breath taking views of the island, or settle down for a nap on an empty beach. It’s all within reach here.
The Grand Canyon, AZ
If you are planning a road trip the Grand Canyon should be on the top of your list of US destinations. The scenic route through the Coconino National Forest as well as the painted desert are a perfect frame for the beautiful canyon in between.
