We traveled through the city of Valdez , Alaska and came across one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen in nature. While entering the city, after crossing through Thompson’s Pass, we came across hundreds of bald eagles nesting in trees and fishing in the streams. It was very easy to see why these are America’s national bird. They are so majestic. There were so many of them, we just had to stop and take it all in.
We stopped our car and found this guy having a very hearty breakfast. This was incredible to catch on video!
There were bald eagles in almost every tree. They didn’t even seem to notice that we were driving through and taking photos of them.
We even managed to see some bald eagle adolescents. The eagles are brown until they reach maturity. Only adult eagles have the distinctive white heads and tails.
We came across this amazing mom eagle watching two of her babies eating lunch. They were sitting on opposite sides of the same pond, yet she managed two keep an eye on both of them. She seemed very protective.
These birds were so incredible. Valdez seems to be a haven for these great birds.
I am sure the plentiful supply of salmon makes this the perfect residence for these birds. There is even a salmon hatchery in Valdez.
I would love the opportunity to go back to Valdez and see these birds again and take more photos. Watching them over the course of a couple of days solidifies my vision of them as the ultimate American symbol.

There is an eagle’s nest on the road near my home in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley. We’ve had fun watching the eagle parents and their chicks. However I’ve never seen a flock of eagles. What a sight in Valdez!
It was truly a sight to see. We must have seen well over 100 Eagles in about an hour.
Nice! I’ve always been a fan of eagles…so majestic :)
Thanks Derek,
There are amazing creatures!
I would love to go to Alaska, it looks like an incredible beautiful place and beautiful photos
I think everyone should visit Alaska at least once in their lifetime. It was life-changing for me :)
You got some beautiful shots of those magnificent creatures! I live in North Vancouver (I can see downtown from my balcony) and I see bald eagles every couple of days flying overhead and landing in nearby trees. It’s completely crazy to be in a big city and see such a wild creature soaring and being bombarded by crows!
Andrea,
Vancouver is one of my favorite cities. I can imagine how awesome it would be to see these amazing birds soaring there. :)
They are such beautiful birds! We saw several on a cruise around Seward Alaska last year. Didn’t get any close-up photos like you did, though.
Wow! What an experience. I’ve never seen more than one eagle at a time – and never that close. Great shots! -Veronica
I’ve never seen them in a group setting either. It ws certainly the first time I had seen so many adolescents, as well. Thanks for the compliment!
I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a bald eagle up close in real life before – only in zoos. You got some great photos there, especially that video of the eagle eating by the river!
They’re such amazing birds. You guys got some great shots of them.
