As Kenin and I start counting down the days until the end of the year, we’ve both agreed that it’s time we started thinking about our New Year’s travel resolutions. You may have come across our ‘bucket list‘ of travel missions to accomplish before we’re too old, and currently, with just five of 50 achieved, we really need to get our skates on!
We have been a little lax in trying to tick off all 50, but we are currently restricted to North America because of Zoe. However, with the New Year in mind, we’ve put together some of the most achievable and desirable items on the list for next year – plus one or two added resolutions of our own.
Spend the Night in a Lighthouse
This is by far one of the easiest items to try to tick off our bucket list – we don’t even have to get on a plane! As a little homework has now taught us, there is in fact a whole society dedicated to lighthouses in the US, so we’re more than equipped to find a cosy night’s stay in one of the many choices around the country. One that we’ve particularly got our eye on is the Saugerties Lighthouse in New York – it’s the only one on the Hudson River and features views of the Catskills Mountains.
See a Play on Broadway
While we’re over in New York to stay in a lighthouse, it seems to make perfect sense that we should go and see a Broadway show too. The bright lights of the Broadway scene have always fascinated me and there’s nothing more exciting than the image of a show’s name broadcast across the signs on Times Square. Chicago, Les Miserables and Jersey Boys are all coming up next year, so it’s time to get booking!
Join the Mile High Club
This is certainly a cheeky one but for two seasoned travellers, it’s got to be done! There’s no need to go into specifics, but certainly if we do see ourselves getting on a plane in the New Year then we’ll be booking first class tickets in order to ensure a ‘first class’ environment, if you will…
Talk to each other more
Last but by no means least, while the above might spice up one of our trips, we’re also resolving to talk to each other a little more on our travels next year. One thing that we’ve both found ourselves to be a little guilty of in recent years is trying to up our pennies on mobile games rather than taking the time to talk to each other about our day. This is something we’d encourage all our fellow travel buddies to do too – instead of whittling away the hours with games on that phone, use it to take pictures!
I just discovered your website and blog. I am loving it. I want to begin doing road trips as I recently retired. I have little talent for planning trips but your trip planners and suggestions sound so simple and fun. Keep the great tips coming. Thanks
