For the last 20 Years the city of Lake Worth, Fl has held an annual Street Painting Festival. We had an awesome time at the festival and wanted to share some pictures of the event. It’s truly fascinating to see what emerges on the street “canvas” in less than 48 hours using just chalk. Sadly there is no way to preserve the images and they only last until the next rain.
Held in early February each year, the city of Lake Worth, FL turns their streets into the largest festival of its kind. With over 400 artists and 200 unique “canvases” the creativity is incredible. You can find all kinds of art from classical reproductions to pop art mashups to completely unique works.
As the Street Painting Festival begins the artists all get to work creating their temporary masterpieces.
All artists are limited to one medium: Chalk
The artists work quickly for the pieces come together since they are racing against time and mother nature.
Many pieces are simple and classical in nature with surprising levels of detail.
Some pieces take inspiration from movies and pop culture.
While other artists delve into more surreal works.
For other artists animals were the star of the show.
One of my favorites were the artists that specialized on perspective pieces. They drew in a way that gave a 3-D look and feel to their work.
Even kids can get into the Street Painting Festival with their own designated section.
The Street Painting Festival is about more than just watching the artists do their thing. During the event the audience participated in the festival by singing or providing other forms of entertainment.
The Street Painting Festival runs for two days and is a great time for everyone who attends. For more information on next years Street Painting Festival take a look at the official website at StreetPaintingFestivalinc.org.
Darn we left Wellington in 1993. We must have just missed the start of this. Thanks for sharing the photos. They are intriguing!
Austin isn’t that far away Mike :) You should come for a visit next year and check it out!
There’s a similar event in Houston, Texas in November every year – Via Colori.
Beautiful drawings! I particularly love the dude drawing on the tree.
Hey! I live out in western Lake Worth (actually it is Unincorporate Palm Beach County but mailing is Lake Worth) and we love going to the street art festival! You got some great photos of the artwork!

Thanks! It was really hard to shoot without a step ladder. The one thing that made me really sad was all the rain they had on Saturday night.
I have to admit, I have a weird impression of Florida and did not expect to see much I liked! I was wrong, many of these are very cool. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve always wondered about these amazing artists who spend the time to do this, just to have the next rain wash their masterpieces away. The must be oozing with talent – busting out of the seams. Have to admit, I’m a bit jealous! -Veronica
It’s amazing isn’t it? The sad part is that there was rain on the Saturday Night of the event. Some pieces that were coming out really great were destroyed because they didn’t cover their work well enough.
